Starting September 30th, all new paddlers renting kayaks in Deep Cove will be required to take part an introductory paddling demonstration.

Why this change

We have implemented mandatory introduction paddle sessions for new kayakers to enhance their skills and safety on the water. This session, along with the requirement for compulsory immersion gear, are part of our commitment to ensuring that paddlers are equipped to handle unexpected situations. By building essential skills and providing proper gear, we aim to reduce risks and create a safer environment for all paddlers, so they can enjoy the water with confidence and security.

Recognizing if you are an experienced paddler:

To help determine what sort of paddler you are, for this initiative we are defining paddler experience as follows:

  • You’ve had formal instruction from a qualified instructor within the past 3 years.
  • You have paddled a sea kayak with a rudder at least three times in the past year.
  • You understand your limitations and paddle in conditions appropriate to your skill level.
  • You know how to perform both a self rescue and assisted and have practiced them within the last two years.
  • You are aware of the ocean’s dangers. Winds, currents and changing conditions.

If you are missing a few of these key points please reach out to us and we would be happy to discuss your options.

Experience does NOT mean:

  • You rented a sit-on-top kayak at a resort once.
  • You’ve paddled a kayak at a lake last summer.
  • You vaguely remember how to re-enter a kayak after capsizing because you watched a video.
  • You are a good swimmer so you will be safe.

Demonstration Times

This introductory session will take up to an hour and slots run regularly at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. When booking your rental, the demonstration will take place during the first part of your designated time, once dismissed you will then have the rest of the rental time available to paddle freely. Please plan to arrive in our office 30 minutes before the start of your rental, this will allow you time to check in and get your equipment before heading out onto the water.

Multiple paddlers

When paddling as a group, we understand that not everyone will have the same level of experience. the following ratios are required to paddle freely without a lesson:

  • For experienced paddlers:
    • a 1:1 ratio of beginner to experienced paddler is required.
  • For advanced paddlers:
    • With a PCL1 certification, the ratio is 2 beginners to 1 PCL1 paddler.
    • With a PCL2 certification, the ratio is 3 beginners to 1 PCL2 paddler.

If these ratios are not met, an introductory session is required.

If in doubt, ask!
