Road to Skookumchuck
Learn to Surf Waves in a Sea Kayak
Advanced 5 Day Course
First 2 days in Deep Cove, then 3 days (2 nights camping) at Skookumchuck
This course runs on two consecutive weekends and is designed to introduce you to a safe and fun sea kayaking experience at the world famous Skookumchuck Tidal Rapid!
Weekend 1 – Deep Cove Kayak (Prep Phase)
The first weekend is in Deep Cove and runs on a Sat & Sunday, 9am-5pm. This prep phase will show you exactly what to expect, and you will have time to run every drill you’ll need at skookumchuck. As we refine your rough water paddling skills, we’ll also explain the best tactical approaches to Skook, so you can navigate the rapid as efficiently as possible – all while having an ABSOLUTE BLAST!!!
Weekend 2 – Skookumchuck Narrows
This is where the fun really starts. The second weekend is at the Skookumchuck Narrows: Friday morning until Sunday evening. Camping on Friday and Saturday night at a private residence just south of the narrows.
What to expect at Skookumchuck Narrows
The current speed starts out very gently on the first day and then increases gradually throughout the weekend. You will be encouraged to challenge yourself at a level you are comfortable with. You will be able to land and take a break anytime you like. In the evenings (at camp) we’ll show you some video footage of YOU surfing, and discuss ways to refine your technique.
Our overall goal is to progress your paddling skills and comfort level in dynamic water. Specific skills you’ll learn:
- Crossing eddy lines and ferrying
- Manoeuvring in waves and current
- Surfing skills
- Forward paddling power
- Bracing, edging and rolling
