A Popular Intro Kayak Course!

This course will give a first time paddler the fundamental skills and knowledge to paddle in protected waters within a group.

The second half of this lesson does include capsizing and rescuing your kayak. You will be going into the water to perform these skills. Wetsuits are provided free of charge with the lesson.

This ‘Sea Kayaking Basics’ package covers the Introduction to Kayaking and Capsize and Re-entry Lessons. It includes basic and intermediate paddling skills, rescue techniques, and water safety.

Both courses are completed in 1 day (on a Saturday).

What to bring on a Lesson

Our best advice is to dress for the weather!

Recommended:
- Comfortable non-cotton base layer
- Waterproof pants & jackets are highly recommended
- secure wet footwear, if you don’t have booties or watershoes then wear something like running shoes that you don’t mind getting wet - no flip flops or open-toed sandals please.
- A non-cotton toque if it’s chilly, or brimmed hat if it’s sunny
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses with a strap. If you wear prescription glasses we also recommend using a strap.
- Insulating long sleeved non-cotton top and bottoms which will keep you warm even if they get wet
- Water bottle (ideally with carabiner)
- Towel & bathing suit for under a wetsuit (wetsuit provided for lessons with planned capsizing)
- Warm change of clothes for after your paddle
- Snacks or lunch for all-day lessons

Please be aware that we have limited space at our shop. Please leave valuables at home or in your vehicle, or bring along a dry-bag. We are able to store smaller items like phones, keys, wallets in office if needed.

Can you store my valuables while we are out on the water?

Our kayak guides and instructors will collect any small valuables from you such as wallets, keys and phones, and store them in our back office while you are paddling. Any larger items like bags, shoes, towels etc may be stored in the public open cubbies by our shop.

What is the Lesson and Tours Cancellation Policy?

If you need to cancel please let us know as soon as possible so we can give your spot to somebody else. We do try to be accommodating so please call us if your plans change last minute.

If you are hoping to get a refund please refer to the cancellation windows below:

Tours: 48 hours notice for a full refund – within 48 hours, no refund

Single-Day Lessons: 7 days notice for a refund (minus $25 registration fee) – 48 hours notice to reschedule to another date where possible.

Multi-Day Lessons: 14 days notice for a refund (minus $25 registration fee) – 7 days notice to reschedule to another date where possible.

Kids Camps: 14 days notice for a refund (minus $40 registration fee) – 7 days notice to reschedule to another date where possible

Private Kids Camps (Pods): 28 days notice for a full refund (depending).

What is the Waiver Policy?

Adults
Any adults 19 years old and over must complete a Deep Cove Kayak Waiver Form prior to participating in any progams with us.

Youths
Anyone under the age of 19 years old must have a Deep Cove Kayak informed consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to participating in any progams with us. If anyone under the age of 19 arrives without a completed inform consent form, they will not be permitted on the water.

When do I arrive for a lesson or a tour?

We recommend arriving to Deep Cove 30-45 minutes before your scheduled lesson or tour, in order to find parking and check-in.

Note: On busy days, planning to park further afield (10 min walk) is advised due to congestion in Deep Cove.

Our guides and instructors will be starting your safety briefing and paddling introduction at your "activity start time". If you are late, we may not be able to grant you access to the lesson or tour.

Groups bringing large buses (important info):
If your bus has a GVW of over 8,850kg, it will need a permit to enter Deep Cove, which can be obtained by clicking here “DNV approved Deep Cove Kayak Group” must be selected when applying for the permit. The permit is FREE OF CHARGE. A map with the designated drop off and pick up zones as well as bus route will be provided to you with your permit - Don’t worry the process is super easy, and if you have any questions you can contact the District Of North Vancouver Engineering Department on 604 990 2370.
