Position Overview:

The Kayak Repair Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing kayaks and paddleboards with minor to moderate damage to ensure they remain in excellent condition for customer use. This role also involves coordinating and shuttling severely damaged watercraft to our repair warehouse at Coast Outdoors, where the technician will perform basic fiberglass repairs as needed. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, hands-on repair skills, and the ability to manage logistics efficiently. The role also includes conducting bi – weekly fleet inventories, collaborating with Inventory Supervisor, and ensuring upkeep of all necessary equipment.


Key Responsibilities:

Repair and Maintenance:

  • Assess and repair minor to moderate damage to kayaks and paddleboards, including cracks, mechanical issues, and cosmetic damage.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks to ensure equipment is safe and operational.
  • Identify watercraft that require extensive repair and coordinate their transport to the Coast Outdoors warehouse for repair by the Coast Outdoors repair technician or yourself.
  • Use appropriate techniques and materials to complete fiberglass, plastic, and cosmetic repairs, including basic fiberglass work at Coast Outdoors.
  • Proactively touch up equipment to ensure minor damage is not worsened. 
  • Keep accurate records of repairs, maintenance tasks, and equipment status.

Transportation and Logistics:

  • Safely shuttle damaged boats and equipment between Deep Cove Kayak, Cates Park Paddling Center and the Coast Outdoors repair warehouse.
  • Coordinate repair schedules and transportation needs with the Rentals Manager, Rentals Supervisors and repair warehouse staff.
  • Ensure proper handling of equipment during transport to prevent further damage.

Inventory and Organization:

  • Monitor repair supplies, tools, and materials, alerting the Rentals Manager when restocking is required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace and ensure tools are properly stored and maintained.
  • Ensure tracking and management of the overall condition of the kayak and paddleboard fleet.
  • Frequent usage and collaboration on boat inventory spreadsheets with rentals inventory supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with small repairs, maintenance, or basic fiberglass/plastic work is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle (valid driver’s license required).
  • Physical stamina to lift, carry, and transport equipment (up to 115lbs).
  • Organizational skills to manage repair schedules and inventory.
  • Familiarity with kayaks, paddleboards, or outdoor equipment is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a seasonal position requiring flexible availability, including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors, depending on repair tasks and weather conditions.
  • Physical work is required, including bending, lifting, and transporting boats.
  • Employees may be required to wear safety gear when performing repairs or handling tools.
